Went out 7/22/05 outside FI Inlet for 0 keeper fluke and only a couple of shorts.
Started fishing at around 11:00 AM at the bell buoy... cought only 1 or 2 short fluke and half-a-dozen skates

Took a ride to FI Reef in around 60 or so feet of water. Nada. :(
Took a ride further east to 50-60 feet of water oppisite ocean beach water tower. Caught a few shorts and that was it till we gave up at around 2PM or so.

Not a good day fishing for us... :(
Gonna try again on Saturday this week though... :-)

I was out just west of the inlet last Sunday, 1/4 mile off Babylon town beach. Caught my limit of fluke - many throw backs. That largest was a 30" - a doormatt.

My secret on catching fluke - location, bait, and presentation

- like most fish here in long island, theyr'e lazy. You got to put to the bait right in front of them. Last week there was this one guy anchored, not having much action. I showed up and start drifting the incoming, from 30ft to 10ft. Back and forth I went, each time catching fluke (a few sea robins, a few blues, many shorts). Everytime I'd hook one, Id mark it on the GPS, so I would again drift the same location. The other fisherman was watching me, he started doing what I was doing. He waved when he caught his first fish...

- the type of bait really does make the difference. For years I was using frozen killeys, this year turned to live killeys - what a positive difference. With the killey, I also use a 2" strip of squid for the best results. Yea I caught fish on the frozen bait, also tried bunker, and calms. Changing to live bait I have noticed a really big difference, so much I'll never go back to frozen bait.

- depending on the current I'm using a 1oz to 3oz weight, with 1ft to 2ft of line between the weight and hook. You have to continuely check that there isn't any seaweed on the bait, that will scare off the fish.

wow, a 30" fluke... hope you took pics... :-)

We use spearing/squid combo. In our exp. we haven't noticed a difference, but hey if you found something that works for you then certainly stick with it... :-)
