welcome to LIFR.

what kind of fishing do you want to do ?

you can probably start by subscribing to (or just picking up a copy) of TheFisherman magazine. It will surely have a list of all the seminars going on teaching you about getting started.

I'd also recommend that you take a trip or two out on one of the local charter/open boats like the port jeff ace or the celtic quest (http://www.celticquestfishing.com)

be sure to pop back on here and let us know some more details so we can try to help you out...

good luck! :-)

thank you so much. One of my friend told me about how to prepare to go fishing and he suggested me to buy a 9ft rod, and I did. I tried in west middle beach last week. rod is pretty good but did not get any fish, but I enjoy it.  Is there another places that I can go fishing?

Alright.  Now im not gonna give you a turorial beacause that would take days of typing but ill give you the basics.  A far as equiptment for a starter get a low end real like a penn silverado sv6000 with a 10ft ugly stik.  I dont know your area so i cant help with location.  I suggest buying a book called surfcasters guide to the striper coast by dj muller.  Its a great read and is packed with info.  Back to reels, when you get your reel spool it up with a 50 pound BRAID of power pro with a 30 pound of fireline under.  I also strongly suggest using plugs.  Go down to a bait shop and theyll tell you all you need to know and if they dont tell me.  I dont know what your budget is but for a started minimun you need a plug bag and a head light.  Also remember to get swirvels at your bait shop so you can easly snap plugs on and off.  Sorry i coudnt give you all the info you probably wanted but that would take days.  Anyway most important rule of fishing is to HAVE FUN.  Thats what its all about.  Also remember your not gonna be the old man of the sea in one year, it takes a LONGGGGGGGG time.  Write back to tell me what you budget is so i can tell you what plugs to start off with.  Good luck and tight lines.  O and one more thing once you figure out if you like it or not try takin lessons from bill wetzel, its expensive but it gives you years of expirience in one 6 hour trip.

ps tell me where your area is so i can help with where to fish when
ps2: go to surfrats.com, its unbelivable how much info you can get from them
