threecjohnny -> GREAT SOUTH BAY HELP!!!! (4/28/2006 4:46:52 PM)

This is my first time fishing in the Great South Bay and man am I confused, How can you fish anywhere else except the cuts and state channel without running aground? I have a 240 BW outrage W/ a 250 Merc and am afraid of going almost anywhere except these areas. I would like to stay near the marina and fish sometimes as well as tube and waterski. Is it possible to do this without running aground? I have done all my fishing on the north shore in the past. How do you do it?

Yeah, the great south bay can be tuff... Especially if you're used to fishing the north shore...

I'm not sure where you launch your boat but I launch out of Bay shore marina and there's alot of space to do some tubing, or other non fishing activities just off the marina all the way to the double bridge... There are some low spots on the south side of that area but as long as you stay a few hundred yards off the north coast you should be fine...

There's quite a few spots to fish in the south bay... But you've gotta follow your bouy's otherwise you will get into trouble... There's really no way around it...

There's quite a few places in the bay that I like to fish... I'll list the most popular ones that I know of:

Ocean Beach - Weakfish, Fluke
West Channel - Weakfish, Fluke
Dickerson Channel - Flounder
FI Lighthouse - Fluke
Kismet Reef - Blackfish, Stripers
Coast Guard Station / Bridge - Fluke, Stripers
Sore Thumb - Flounder

Trying to catch a keeper fluke in the bay this year is gonna be quite a challenge with an 18" limit... I try and do ALL my fluking in the ocean in 40-80 feet of water and see what depth does the best... Keep an eye out here for my reports on ocean fluking... :-)
